The seat belt in the new 2027 Volvo EX60

Since the creation of the Volvo brand, there has been one essential element that the founders never compromised on – the importance of feeling safe on board their vehicle.

As a result, the Swedish brand has continuously developed cutting-edge technologies to ensure that every occupant can feel safe. Notable examples include the side airbag, the whiplash protection system, the blind spot monitoring system, and city safety.

But among all these technologies, there is one that has made Volvo famous: the 3-point safety belt.

In this article, we take a detailed look at the seat belt developed by Volvo as early as 1959 and how the 2027 Volvo EX60 is once again revolutionizing this safety feature.

Technologies Surrounding the Seat Belt Developed by Volvo

“Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make is, and must remain, safety.” — Gustaf Larsson, co-founder of Volvo

In 1959, Volvo marked a turning point in automotive safety history by introducing the three-point safety belt, designed by Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin.

Unlike existing lap belts, this system distributes the forces of an impact between the pelvis and the chest, reducing the risk of serious injury. Notably, Volvo chose to make its patent free to use so that all manufacturers could adopt it, thereby helping to save millions of lives across the world.

Over the decades, the brand has continued to improve this device by integrating inertia reels for greater comfort, pyrotechnic pretensioners that tighten the belt during an impact, and load limiters to reduce the stress exerted on the body.

Thanks to all its developments and knowledge in the field of seat belts, the brand has pushed the effectiveness of its system one step further for the 2027 Volvo EX60 with the introduction of the multi-adaptive safety belt.

The Seat Belt of the New Volvo EX60

Despite the fact that seat belts save hundreds of thousands of lives every year, there are still efforts to be made to save even more.

The reason – belts that are not adapted to all body types.

The Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt

To remedy this, Volvo has officially announced the first multi-adaptive safety belt, introduced first in the electric 2027 Volvo EX60 and then rolled out to all new models arriving soon.

In short, this new belt uses real-time data from all vehicle sensors (speed, direction, nature of the accident, etc.) to adapt the tension and behavior of the harness according to the height, weight, and morphology of the occupant.

Ultimately, this belt no longer functions as a simple mechanical strap, but as a dynamic and personalized system: in the event of a severe impact, it can tighten more for a large adult to better protect the head; in the event of a lighter impact, it can modulate the force to reduce the risk of bruising or fractures.

In essence, a new belt for a new era of the automobile where electric power, comfort, and safety become one.

Awarded by Time

A few weeks before its official release, the Volvo belt received the title of Invention of the Year 2025 by the American media Time. Proof once again that Volvo is ahead of the competition in developing safety features.
