When shopping for a used Volvo, it is easy to get lost in the different names, configurations, colors, options, and even battery range.
Indeed, for each new model year, Volvo makes small refinements to keep existing models up to date – the Volvo XC60 Recharge is no exception, with a very relevant update for those who enjoy driving electric.
Today, we will go into detail on the 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge and discover exactly which battery this model year is equipped with.
The Volvo XC60 Recharge is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Volvo XC60, the brand’s compact luxury SUV; its best-selling model in the lineup.
It combines a turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor driving the rear axle, allowing it to offer standard all-wheel drive without a traditional driveshaft.
In practice, it allows everyday driving in 100% electric mode as long as the battery is sufficiently charged, while still maintaining the range and versatility of a combustion engine for long-distance travel.
In the Canadian market, it is clearly positioned as an alternative to German luxury SUVs (BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC), targeting drivers who want to reduce fuel consumption and emissions without immediately switching to a fully electric vehicle.
In earlier model years, the XC60 Recharge already relied on this sophisticated plug-in hybrid architecture, but its electric capability was more limited than the 2022 model.
The lithium-ion battery, located in the central tunnel, offered a capacity of just over 10 kWh and later 11.6 kWh, resulting in a real-world range often between 30 and 40 km depending on conditions. The rear electric motor, combined with the turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine for a total output exceeding 400 hp, already delivered strong performance with multiple driving modes.
It is precisely from this foundation that Volvo significantly evolved the XC60 Recharge for the 2022 model year, revising the battery and electric system to offer a much more usable daily electric range for Canadian drivers.
Visually, an XC60 Recharge Inscription is recognized by its more classic wheel design, more prominent exterior chrome accents, and an overall presentation that is more “elegant” than sporty.
For a used-car buyer, the Inscription is often the best compromise between the T8 powertrain and the larger 2022 battery.
The R-Design version of the 2022 XC60 Recharge is aimed at those who want a plug-in hybrid SUV with a more sporty personality.
Inside, you often find a darker cabin, seats with firmer support, and a more performance-oriented design.
At the top of the lineup is the XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered, the most performance-focused version.
The result is a more precise, faster XC60 Recharge that still retains everyday electric driving capability.
In 2022, the battery increases from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh.
This enables approximately 58 km of electric driving range.
Volvo also adds the integrated Google system.
The Hybrid mode automatically optimizes the use of the electric and gasoline engines.
