When it comes to producing a vehicle today, having the most beautiful design, the best engine, and the most options possible is no longer enough to offer an incomparable user experience.
And Volvo understood this perfectly by starting to collaborate with Google very early on.
Indeed, since 2017, the two companies have been jointly developing an infotainment system that allows Volvo drivers to have an intuitive experience with their car.
From the launch of Android Automotive OS to the deployment of Gemini in upcoming updates, discover the new AI assistant that promises to revolutionize your daily life.
The partnership between Google and Volvo Cars took shape starting in 2017, when Google announced the development of Android Automotive OS, an operating system designed to run natively in vehicles.
Unlike Android Auto, Android Automotive is integrated directly into the vehicle's architecture. In fact, in 2019, the Polestar 2 became one of the first production vehicles in the world to feature Android Automotive OS with integrated Google services.

From 2020, Volvo gradually rolled out Android Automotive OS across its new models, particularly for electric versions like the XC40 Recharge. The vehicles directly integrate Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store, allowing for a user experience close to that of an Android phone, but fully adapted to the automotive environment.
In June 2021, Volvo Cars officially announced the strengthening of its strategic partnership with Google. The goal is clear – to accelerate the development of the connected experience and offer continuous software updates via OTA (over-the-air).

Between 2022 and 2024, Volvo became one of the most advanced manufacturers in the logic of the software-defined vehicle, where the user experience and features evolve primarily through software updates.
During this period, Google Assistant was progressively optimized to offer better integration into the Volvo ecosystem, allowing for more natural voice interactions with vehicle functions.
At the Google I/O conference in 2025, Volvo and Google announced an expansion of their partnership.
On this occasion, Google presented the integration of Gemini, its advanced conversational artificial intelligence, into a Volvo EX90. And there is a clear change because Gemini is no longer limited to executing simple voice commands – it understands context, can handle complex requests, and offers much more natural interactions.

This evolution marks the transition from a traditional voice assistant to a conversational AI capable of dialoguing with the driver.
In 2026, the Swedish brand presents the new 100% electric Volvo EX60 with record range, but above all, the integration of Google Gemini at the heart of its infotainment system.

Thanks to Gemini, voice interaction evolves considerably – the driver can formulate complex requests, ask contextual questions, plan a route with precise criteria, or obtain personalized information without using the vehicle's physical buttons.
For example, you need to go to a famous Swedish furniture store to pick up a piece of furniture. However, you doubt whether the box containing this furniture will fit in your Volvo EX60. Thanks to Gemini, you have the answer in an instant.
However, it's not just the new models in the Volvo range that will benefit from Gemini integrated into the infotainment system.
All models from 2020 onwards will soon receive a major OTA (over-the-air) update allowing, among other things, the integration of Gemini and Volvo Car UX. These include the Volvo XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, and V60.
