4315 Boulevard Métropolitain Est, Montreal, QC, H1R 1Z4Tyres are at the top of the list of safety features that should not be neglected when maintaining your Volvo. Tyres in poor condition not only cause disruption on the road, they can also lead to accidents.
At Volvo, the quality of our tyres is at the heart of our "zero accident" strategy. Hence the special marking on some of them: the "VOL" inscription.
What does this mean? And why does Volvo choose to put this marking on certain tyre models? This article explains everything you need to know about this special feature.
The "VOL" marking on certain tyres indicates that they are specifically approved by Volvo.
It's not just an aesthetic detail: it shows that the tyre has been developed, tested and approved in direct collaboration with the Swedish manufacturer. In other words, these tyres meet precise specifications drawn up by Volvo, based on the technical requirements of its different models.
This includes very specific performance criteria such as :
Each "VOL" tyre is the result of a series of rigorous tests carried out jointly by the tyre manufacturer and Volvo engineers to ensure total compatibility with the vehicle's systems, including driving aids.
Choosing "VOL" approved tyres is above all choosing quality and safety.
Thanks to their tailor-made design, "VOL" tyres wear more evenly, extending their life and improving their long-term profitability. What's more, they are designed to reduce rolling noise, optimise on-board comfort and ensure excellent road holding, whatever the conditions.
In terms of safety, these tyres offer better braking response and more precise control in bends or on slippery roads. Their performance remains stable even at high speeds or during emergency braking, in perfect harmony with the vehicle's driving aids.
Finally, it's important to note that the use of approved tyres is often recommended to preserve the manufacturer's warranty. In the event of a mechanical problem or accident, the use of non-compliant tyres can raise questions, particularly if incompatibility has affected the vehicle's handling.
At the moment, all Volvo models have dedicated tyres. Especially on Volvo's original winter wheel kits, the fitted tyres are all displayed with the "VOL" logo.
It is technically possible to fit tyres without the "VOL" marking on a Volvo, as long as the recommended dimensions and indices are respected.
However, this is not recommended by the manufacturer. Even though standard tyres may seem compatible on paper, they will not necessarily offer the same performance or the same synergy with the vehicle's specific features.
The risks are real: a loss of overall performance, faster or uneven tyre wear, reduced driving comfort and less predictable road behaviour, particularly in emergency situations.
To avoid any mistakes, we strongly advise you to consult your vehicle's owner's manual or seek the advice of an authorised Volvo dealer, who will be able to recommend the most suitable tyres for your model and use.
The "VOL" marking is more than just a detail: it's a genuine guarantee of quality, safety and performance for Volvo drivers.
So to make sure you don't drive a Volvo on the wrong tyres, we advise you to contact our spare parts service or to make an appointment directly with the workshop to change your summer or winter tyres.
